RUN TOWARD HOLINESS

Run Toward Holiness

As I study for this upcoming Sunday’s Hour of Power (Sunday School lesson), I am reminded that the Christian life is not a casual walk—it is a race. A race that must be run with purpose, with endurance, and with intention.

The writer of Hebrews paints a powerful picture: we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses—men and women who ran their race by faith and finished well. Their lives remind us that holiness does not happen by accident. It is chosen daily.

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”

— Hebrews 12:1 (KJV)

As I reflect on this passage, I’m struck by the reminder that before we can run well, we must first lay something down. Some things in our lives are not sinful—but they are heavy. They slow our spiritual pace and distract us from God’s call. God lovingly invites us to release every weight and every sin that keeps us from moving forward freely.

This race also requires patience. There are seasons when God allows discipline—not as punishment, but as proof of His love. Discipline shapes us, stretches us, and aligns us with His holiness.

“For whom the Lord loves He chastens…” (Hebrews 12:6, NKJV)

Holiness is not about perfection—it’s about direction. It’s about choosing God’s way, even when it’s uncomfortable. Hebrews 12 warns us through the example of Esau that momentary decisions can have lasting consequences. Holiness calls us to look beyond the moment and live with eternal vision.

“Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.”

— Hebrews 12:14 (NKJV)

As I prepare to teach this lesson, I’m challenged to ask myself:

What weight do I need to lay aside?

Am I running with endurance—or just going through the motions?

Am I pursuing holiness intentionally?

My prayer is that we don’t just talk about the race—we run it well, with our eyes fixed on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith.
